ICU, PACU, NICU, ED/Trauma Ceiling Pendants
Thanks to innovative lighting technology, it is now possible to use LEDs (light-emitting diodes) as surgical lighting in the operating room.
Compared to conventional lighting systems, the adaptive light of the new TRUMPF iLED permits better adaptation to individual surgical situations – a feature that is unique worldwide and revolutionizes the work of the surgeon.
Advantages:
- Nearly unlimited life cycle minimises outages and provides long-term protection of investments
- Variably adjustable colour temperature for outstanding contrast in every surgical lighting situation
- Shadow correction for optimal illumination on the surface and at depth
- Ergonomic, sterile operational concept guarantees control of all functions by the sterile surgical team
- Infrared-free light almost completely avoids heat generation in the head area
- Integrated camera systems for digital video transmission in accordance with the SDI standard
TRUMPF Medical is the world leader in boom arm technology. See the boom arm in action in the ICU re-creation below.
The ceiling pendant systems that were developed especially for the intensive care requirements make optimal use of the available space around the bed of the patient. At the same time, all systems for patient care and monitoring are accessible in an ergonomic position. Particular emphasis was placed on versatile and easy positioning in order to allow for safe operation of the system - both in normal situations and in emergencies. The ceiling pendants for intensive care feature a high carrying capacity on the monitor and respiration side, as well as on the infusion side. TRUMPF Medizin Systeme has extensive experience in a large number of intensive care applications. The very different and complex configurations realized here demonstrate the flexibility of the system design and the accuracy of the basic technical solutions.
LED Surgical Lighting / Surgery Lights
"The TRUMPF iLED
series has up to 184 white and color LEDs, providing up to 160,000 lux of
low-heat, virtually shadow-free illumination. The iLED light field is adjustable
from 11.5 to 8.6 inches. Heat increase at the surgeon’s head is less than 1°C, a
significant benefit in terms of surgeon and surgical team comfort. The iLED
compensates for even extreme shadowing created by surgeon positioning or the
depth of the wound, by providing settings that switch off unnecessary LEDs and
increase the intensity to the remaining ones, depending on the surgical
situation, without repositioning the lights during surgery."
"The iLED offers the ability to change color temperature without
affecting light intensity, which provides optimal contrast and tissue
differentiation. A single light allows surgeons to change color temperature from
3,500 K to 5,000 K, without affecting light intensity. By adjusting color
temperature, the surgical team can optimize contrast and tissue differentiation,
based on factors including the type and depth of the surgery, blood flow,
surgeon’s preference, and even his or her degree of eye fatigue. The key to
adjusting color temperature is in the ability to change the ratio of white to
color LEDs, thus ‘mixing’ the desired color tone. Bathed in warm, nonglare light
(about 3,500 K), skin and light-tissue parts reflect less, and the contrast
remains intact. Colder light colors (up to 5,000 K), however, are preferred for
deeper-lying body areas and for longer surgeries. When eyes are tired and
concentration lapses, we perceive cold, or blue, color tones as a relief to the
eye. Either way, the surgical team, whether working on shorter outpatient
procedures or longer surgeries, has their choice."
The TRUMPF iLED is equipped with a sterile control unit, which
permits the surgical team to control all functions, including on/off, dimming,
color temperature, shadow correction, and camera functions quickly and easily.
Both the TRUMPF iLED 5 and the new iLED 3 are available with TRUMPF’s new
integrated TRUMPF TruVidia CCD camera, which provides razor-sharp, true-to-life
video and still images. A new iLED, ideal for emergency ICU procedures, is also
scheduled to be released in late 2007.

MD BuyLine Speaks about iLED
The TRUMPF iLED uses 184 white and color LEDs to provide
160,000 lux of low heat with virtually shadow-free illumination. Perhaps its
most outstanding feature, however, is that for the first time ever the iLED
gives the surgical team the ability to change color temperature. Bathed in
warm, non-glare light (about 3,500 Kelvin), skin and light tissue parts reflect
less and the contrast remains intact. Colder light colors (up to 5,000
Kelvin), however, were preferred in tests for deeper lying body areas and for
longer surgeries. Current studies prove that the color temperature influences
the ability to concentrate, which can be a significant benefit during longer
procedures. One reason for this is that when the eyes get tired and the
concentration lapses, cold or blue color tones are perceived as a relief. The
surgical team, whether working on shorter outpatient procedures or longer
surgeries, has a choice.
Shadows that are cast over the surgical site by the position
and movement of the surgical team, as well as by equipment, are dealt with
every day in surgery. Because each LED used in the iLED has its own
convergence lens, each also generates its own light field. Together, the
fields combine into a very homogenous and shadow-free light. Even potentially
extreme shadowing created by surgeon positioning, equipment and the depth of
the wound or incision are compensated for by the overlapping light fields and
by the iLED switching off unnecessary LEDs and increasing the intensity to the
remaining ones.
In addition to shadows, heat is also noticeably absent when
using the iLED. Its 160,000 lux of illumination is produced without the
expected heat emission thanks to the so-called "cold" IR-free light
of the LEDs. Even directly under the lamp, practically no heat can be felt.
This feature improves the comfort of the surgeon and the surgical team, thereby
enhancing their ability to perform.
Since LEDs have dramatically long life-cycles –
approximately 20,000 hours, or an estimated five to eight years — the iLED
represents ongoing cost savings and efficiency for medical facilities. The
iLED minimizes the cost, time and surgical interruptions related to changing
more expensive halogen or gas discharge bulbs commonly used in today’s surgical
lights. As for the bulbs (LEDs), they are an LED/lens unit and are supposed to
have a life cycle of 20,000 hours, although in Europe it has been reported to
be 40,000 hours. The cost to replace a bulb is approximately $7.80. The pods
are composed of individual bulbs so you don’t lose the whole pod when one goes
out, nor do you get significant degradation of parameters.
An important additional feature of the iLED is its sterile
operating system. The iLED can be operated via a sterile knob that controls
all functions or a separate control panel. This enables the surgeons
themselves to configure the lights according to their individual needs. And
these needs can vary dramatically, especially with the color temperature.
